A few weeks ago, one of my girl friends asked if we could make maxi skirts. Being the engineer I am, I wanted to work off a pattern, so I found McCall’s 6608.  Same night I picked it up from Hancock Fabrics, I bought the interlock knit in navy (it’s medium weight) and went with 1 1/4″ wide elastic since they didn’t have any 1 1/2″ wide available.

I love long skirts, but I’m still trying to figure out this maxi skirt thing without tripping over it. :) It’s definitely a nice, warm skirt for winter!

Also, the sweater I’m wearing was knitted by my mom. It’s one of my favorites! Here’s the link to the pattern.

Pattern Description

Pattern is described as a skirt with elasticized waist and godets. It’s a maxi skirt, with godets, and an elastic waistband.

Pattern Sizing

I tried to pre-fit the pattern per the instructions in the pattern, and almost made a size bigger. Fortunately, a reviewer wrote that this pattern ran very big, so I went with a size 12. I probably could have gone smaller, in fact. But it fits! And I can always take in the waistband easily, if necessary.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Pretty much. I’m sure the fabric used in the photo shoot was made of a lighter-weight fabric than what I used.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yep! Easiest of the four styles!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

It was so easy and pretty fast. And with the godets, it added a little flare to the skirt that you wouldn’t normally get from a tube maxi skirt.

Fabric Used

A medium-weight interlock knit. Probably better used for a light-weight sweatshirt because it’s a lot of fabric and the skirt was pretty heavy when I was done with it.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made

No alterations or changes, aside from using a different width of elastic.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

If I can find a lighter-weight knit, I’d make one for the spring/summer. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a maxi skirt with a little flare.

Conclusion

Making this skirt made me realize how much I need a serger. Thankfully, my sewing machine has a walking foot, so it made sewing the skirt a lot less painful than it could have been. :)

I found the pattern for this little guy on Pinterest, but here’s the direct link to the pattern. Whenever I find awesome crochet or knitted items, I usually send them to my mom. I think she takes it as a way of me subtly asking her to make the item for me, since I don’t know how to crochet or knit :) So when I sent her the pattern for this amigurumi dragon, she spend a weekend making it with a bunch of leftover materials she had laying around.

I might have to finally learn crochet so I can make an army of amigurumi dragons!

First Completed Quilt

And I’ve finally completed my first quilt! I know I’ve been absent on the blog recently, but I’ve been working on one crafting related side project (which crosses over into my occupation of being a software developer), and then a new video game came out, so I’ve been playing a bit of that. But, with my husband’s sister and her family coming to stay with us soon, I needed to get some projects cleaned up in the craft room, I mean, spare bedroom, so that they would have a place to stay. After picking up a good color of thread for the binding (because a type of top stitching would be involved), I finished up the quilt with minimum errors.

Penguin Jumpers

I have a great fondness for penguins, so when a friend posted an article about penguins in New Zealand who need help recovering from an oil spill, I wanted to help. The article encouraged those who wanted to help to knit little jumpers (or sweaters, for Americans) for the penguins to protect them from ingesting oil they might consume while preening their feathers.

Unfortunately, I can’t knit, but my mom can! So I enlisted her help, and I would pay for shipping the jumpers to New Zealand.

At this time, the company that is taking the jumpers has said they have reached “critical mass” for jumpers, so they don’t need anymore (but will continue to take any that have been completed). A brief search online has shown that these sweaters have been useful in other oil spills over the years, so sadly, I think that even though the jumpers may not be needed for these penguins for this spill, they might be useful in the future :(

Baker’s Cove Shawl

A while ago, I asked my mom to make me a shawl. She loves knitting, so she agreed, but I had to come up with the style and colors I wanted. After searching and consulting friends, I settled on the Baker’s Cove Shawl on KnitPicks.

The colors I chose were Firecracker and Basalt Heather. I wanted more of a neutral color, like an ivory, instead of the grey, but those colors were sold out. Much to her amusement, I picked her school’s colors for my shawl. Well, they’re close to my school’s colors as well! (But that was purely unintentional. I just love the color red).

Glittens!

During the summer, Richard and I took our parents on a trip to the coast (he took our dads fishing). We stayed in a little town called Ocean Park, and on the road to the beach (literally, a stone’s throw from the beach) was a yarn shop (that also had a little restaurant inside).  Mom and I checked it out one day, and I noticed a pattern for fingerless gloves that were also mittens.  Kind of like a Popple for your hand!  She said she would make me a pair.

Here’s what she had to say about them:

Made from Denali color Rainbow (hand dyed sock yarn, purchased at Pacific Fabrics). I used several patterns to make the glittens.
